Most Seen Animals in Cuyabeno
Cuyabeno Reserve is the largest in the Ecuadorian Amazon, spanning over 590 hectares. Among the most important species living within the reserve are monkeys, tapirs, pink river dolphins, giant otters, caimans, anacondas, amphibians, and the hoatzin bird. Not to mention, birds are the jewels of the Amazon, and in the Cuyabeno Reserve, there are around 550 different bird species recorded.
Monkeys
Cuyabeno records 10 different species of monkeys, including Capuchins, Barizos, Akis, and Bariños, among others.
Tapirs
One of the most curious animals to see in Cuyabeno is the lowland tapir, native to the Amazon rainforest.
Pink River Dolphins
Pink river dolphins can reach lengths of up to 2.5 meters. Their beautiful pink color intensifies as they mature. They are very friendly, intelligent, and curious animals.
Giant Otters
As their name suggests, giant otters are the largest in the world, measuring almost two meters in length and weighing 30 kg. They are particularly noisy, active, and curious. Their conservation status is also threatened, with only a few thousand individuals estimated to be in the wild.
Alligators
They can reach sizes of up to 4 meters, but individuals measuring 6 meters in length have been recorded. The black caiman is the largest predator.
Anacondas
Their diet consists of fish, reptiles, waterfowl, and mammals. They generally measure between 2.5 to 4 meters but can reach approximately 7 meters. Although there are questionable reports of anacondas measuring 9 to 11 meters. Females are larger than males.
Amazon Leaf Frog
This frog has striking yellow legs and chest, along with its green back and feline-like eyes. It is a frog that can be easily distinguished at a glance.
Hoatzin Bird
The hoatzin is one of the strangest birds, both in appearance and in its customs and feeding habits.
