How to Navigate United States–Ecuador Travel Advisories

Travel Advisory Levels
First, it’s important to know that the United States puts out travel advisories to different countries depending on the level of risk that is possible there. This is to help their citizens decide where they are comfortable going. Citizens can check current travel advisories shared by visiting travel.state.gov.
There are four travel advisory levels, and they are as follows:
Level 1: Exercise normal precautions
Level 2: Exercise increased caution
Level 3: Reconsider travel
Level 4: Do not travel
Level four, with " do not travel, " is the worst. And these places should be avoided for current travel and may be saved for a future date.
Ecuador's Current Travel Advisory
Currently, Eucaodor is listed as level 2, with level 3 and level 4 areas existing within the country.
Level two is exercised increased caution. This means the country is still safe to travel in, but potential dangers depend on where you go. This is important to note. While there may be dangerous areas in the country, there are many people and businesses that are open, friendly, and expecting United States citizens and other foreigners to visit and engage with local culture and tourism. Additionally, travel can be planned that avoids danger areas entirely.
Travel Advisory Suggestions
Since Ecuador is level 2, it is ok to travel here with some precautions!

- Azuay Province - Where the colonial city of Cuenca is located
- Pichinca - The capital of Ecuador, Quito
- Tungurahua Province - The location of Banos de Agua Santa and the GeoTours offices
And though Sucumbios has alerts advising against travel, in the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserves, where the Green Forest Ecolodge is, there’s not much to worry about aside from some mosquito bites. The area near the lodge has been safe with no incidents.

- Enroll in STEP. STEP stands for Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and provides updates and alerts from the U.S Embassy and/or consulate.
- Monitor local media for news that may affect your travel
- Keep aware of your surroundings
- Avoid large crowds or demonstrations taking place
- Consider getting travel and health insurance
