Where to Find Sloths in Cuyabeno?

1. Edges of Laguna Grande

Laguna Grande is undoubtedly the number one hot spot for sloth sightings in Cuyabeno.

Why it's ideal:

  • Abundant cecropia trees (their favorite food)
  • Easy visibility from canoes
  • High wildlife concentration zone
  • Direct access from Green Forest Ecolodge

Best time: Early mornings (6:00-9:00 AM) and sunsets (4:00-6:00 PM)

Our guides' tip: Look in trees near the water, especially on branches extending over the lagoon. Sloths prefer these locations for the natural breeze and abundance of fresh leaves.

2. Primary Forest Trails

Guided walks through primary forest offer excellent opportunities, though they require more patience and a trained eye.

Best trails:

  • Tarapoto Trail (2-3 hours)
  • Path to the Siona community
  • Palm tree trail along the Cuyabeno River

What to look for:

  • Unusual movement in tree canopies
  • Dark masses that look "out of place"
  • Freshly fallen leaves (sign of recent feeding)
  • Broken branches or claw marks on trunks

3. Secondary Channels and Streams

Small channels branching from the main river are privileged zones, especially during flood season.

Advantages:

  • Less boat traffic (less disturbance)
  • Denser vegetation at low heights
  • Opportunity for silent canoe approach

4. Specific Trees Sloths Love

Our guides know individual trees where sloths are habitually found:

  • Cecropia (trumpet tree): Their absolute favorite food
  • Inga (ice-cream bean): Important nutrient source
  • Ficus: Popular refuge for its dense canopy
  • Bombacaceae: Appreciated for their height and safety

Look in trees near the water, especially on branches extending over the lagoon.
